      Material

The first message from Google I/O this year is that Google wants consistent UI across all devices. In doing so, Google introduced it’s new design language: Material.

      Gmail

      What is Material?

      • Cards with typographic emphasis
      • Bold accent colors
      • Depth
      • Animations

If you’ve been keeping up with the Polymer Project this should look pretty familiar to you. In fact an Android-ified version of this calculator demo was shown as an example of Material during the keynote.

The animation aspect is interesting. “Nothing teleports from one place to another” - a phrase uttered in the keynote that really capture’s google’s new philosophy. Buttons are animated, icons are animated, drawers are animated, transitions between screens in an app are animated, and even transitions between screens in different apps are animated. They even claim that mobile web sites built with Polymer using the Material design will get all of these animations and maintain 60fps.

Check out the Keynote promo video to get a better idea of what it’s like!

Is this just UI over their apps and their default Android? Or they going to force this on the manufacturers such as HTC who have their own UI?

@Scuzz I think it’ll be a base for both oems and developers to branch from. Much like holo was.
