I was thinking we could have a different lists of films for different categories and then we can talk about each one we watch.
I will tidy up the first post later on so its a bit better.

Here are two great movies you should definitely watch if you haven’t seen them.
Memories of Murder - Great movie, check it out!
Oldboy - I’m sure most people have see the 2013 remake, but if you haven’t check out the original. -
The original Oldboy is realllly well done.
In the vein of Korean action movies,
The Man from Nowhere is another solid option -

@Schamper The American one OK. I didn’t like it as I have read the books and seen the Swedish original. The Swedish is on point with the books.

@Almost I have seen the original Oldboy and didn’t think it was that great. I watched it because it was supposed to be really good but to me it was just some normal film. I never got some immense feeling I do when I watch films I enjoy.
But yeah, spoiler plugin yo.

On weird Swedish movies, that Let The Right One In movie was pretty good. I avoided the new American remake because it’s not as good apparently, surprise surprise.
Also there’s a German film called Die Welle (The Wave) I saw years ago that was cool. A teacher is explaining the power of a dictatorship to his students, and as an experiment they give themselves a uniform and a name, salute, etc, and adopt the teacher as their leader. He’s not evil or anything, problems only arise through the students themselves.
Last film I watched was probably Under The Skin, which has Scarlett Johansson as an alien in disguise preying upon Scottish men. It’s creepy and weird but also really well made and shot. And if that’s not enough she has nude scenes.

I watched Time Crimes (if I remember correctly) from Scuzzy’s list last night, would not recommend. The concept of the movie is interesting, but poorly acted.

Tonight was a @President_Choob night: Aged scotch (from Scotland, no less) and Die Welle.
Holy fuck is that a powerful movie. I have some disagreements with some of the details, but overall it definitely qualifies as a must see. I’d really like to see as strong of a message for other lingering cultural wounds like slavery, or imperialism, or (more topically) rising anti-muslim sentiments. Thanks for the suggestion, Choob.
P.S. for the sake of loving our fellow BBers, can we please try to include IMDB links for all references in this thread? Including responses to movies already mentioned, please.
EDIT: I kept drinking (moving on to a chardonnay now) and kept watching.
Moon was up next. What a waste of time. It was neither a mind fuck nor a good movie. Sure, the graphics were pretty meh, even for a 2009 movie, I can accept that. But it never redeemed itself. The story is a well explored sci-fi trope with nothing new to add. Oh, the main character is isolated and discovers that what he though he knew isn’t as it seems? What an intriguing and novel idea! Coupled with the decent-at-best acting and random scenes that have no affect on plot nor character development and you’re left with a movie that’s only “mindfuck” is trying to decide whether the continuity errors were purposeful or not (I’m pretty sure they weren’t). How it got 8.0 on imdb and 90% on Rotten Tomatoes is beyond me - were they watching a different movie? Maybe it’s the alcohol but I’m really angry about that movie. I am utterly disappointed a would give a resounding “no” if I were asked to recommend it.As far as I’m concerned, that makes 0/2 for that reddit list. If anyone finds a movie on that list that’s actually worth the time, I’d really like to know. Seems to me that you’re better off taking the suggestions from members here.

I watched Locke over the weekend. I really don’t know what to think about it. Without spoiling much, the film is about a guy driving down UK motorways speaking to various people on his mobile. That is it.
I was bored during the film as nothing really happens, there are no huge explosions, no car chases and you don’t even see another on screen character. After it had finished I found myself thinking that it was one of the worst films i have ever seen. Thinking about it now, while typing this reply, I think I have changed my mind.The amount of information you get from conversations with the various people is amazing. Thinking back on the film now, you know the characters past, his current situation and possibly his future situation. This is the same for the other characters you hear too. All this character development from a few phone calls.
I would recommend seeing this film and not to turn it off after the first half hour.

@Scuzz, just finished Locke. I also quite liked the movie. It’s definitely a character driven movie - it’s all about the emotion and relationships. I prefer movies that have no eye candy but a good story to one with all the visual effects and the personality of a plank of wood (I’m looking at you Avatar), so I didn’t feel the some discontent that you mentioned.
A good watch overall. I think it made some good points about relationships, emotion, and morality.

When listing a new film i think it might be best to put a category the film fits into, “Drama”, “Crime Drama”, “Action”, etc… -
Not on any of the lists, but tonight I watched The Imitation Game
For those of you who don’t know, it’s the one where Benerdick Cambridgebach plays Alan Turing - his usual “I’m a huge dickbag” role. But this time with character development!
Overall it was enjoyable - it did a good job with balancing the technical aspects with the appealing to a wide audience aspects (With the exception of “You-lers theorem,” Everyone knows it’s pronounced “Oiler”). I won’t say it ranks in my favorite movies, but it’s definitely worth watching if you’re into computers, WWII, or just Benedirk himself.
EDIT: I guess this movie would fall under Biography? Historical? Drama?

Old Boy would be Action (Korean) -
