    • RE: Android Wear

My hands are usually by my side when I’m walking about so they are in close proximity to my pockets. When i feel a message i pull my phone out press the button on the way up. The screen is usually on way before i even glance down at my phone. Then it goes back into my pocket. If I need to reply or do anything else, i stand to the side so people don’t walk into me and i don’t walk into them.

I can understand for quick glances but i personally don’t need to save about 2 seconds when checking a notification.

@Schamper You also said the NPM release should still be compatible with 0.3.2.

I can do all that with a quick glance at my phone. Most of the newer versions of android are capable of lock screen widgets so you don’t even need to unlock your phone to get your notifications.

    • RE: Upgrades and Backups

I’ll test it out again @schamper. It was getting disabled when booting up NodeBB and it was also causing NodeBB to crash when i used the --dontcheckplugin thing.

error: [plugins/nodebb-plugin-shoutbox] This plugin is reportedly incompatible with your version of NodeBB, so it has been disabled.
error: [plugins/nodebb-plugin-shoutbox] Use `--no-check-plugins` if you wish to live dangerously.

I see them as very gimmicky, much like 3DTV.

My phone is literally in my pocket and all I have to do is pull it out and press a button and I have all the same information right there. It takes seconds. I can understand it being used for a quick glance to see who text you, the time, emails, etc… but most of the time when I do check for them I would like to reply to the messages so I would need to pull my phone out anyway.
Obviously to bypass that they have the voice commands but I feel that people will never use it in public. I have never seen or heard anyone use Siri or the Google equivalent in public or even in their homes.

People are afraid of looking silly and by saying random commands out loud to electronic devices attached to your arm you are going to look silly. Until this becomes normal to people I do not see it becoming the next big thing.

I could just strap my phone to my arm and have basically the same product.

It won’t happen again. I have a script for daily backup of the database.

    • Upgrades and Backups

      Hi guys,

Just a little info on what happened last night.
In my great wisdom I decided to upgrade NodeBB without taking a backup up the database. The upgrade caused some issues and in my tired state i managed to somehow mess up the database and nothing would work. The only backup I have was from last month.

I have now managed to get the site back up with a database backup from last month. We are missing most of the posts, threads and newer members but luckily enough we don’t post that much and we didn’t have that many members. This should be an excuse to post more and to get more members to get back up to speed with where we were.

As we are back on a stable version of NodeBB most of the plugins we had installed and working before do not work now.and so we are running just the basic setup. Not having a shoutbox for a while should encourage people to post in the forums :)

I will look into improving backups and upgrade for the future so nothing like this happens again.

      Future notes:

      • BACKUP!!1!
      • Stable release only!

It’s all a learning experience. I will accept beatings from all of you as punishment.

    • [nodebb-theme-seawolf] A dark theme for NodeBB

      Hi guys,

Here is a theme I have been working on for NodeBB. It’s based on the Vanilla theme. I found the colour scheme at https://kuler.adobe.com/ which has some very nice colour schemes. It’s worth checking out.

      Screenshots of the theme:

This is a work in progress so expect some bugs and some ugliness until I can sort them out. The admin panel need work but I’m hoping to sort that out soon.
This is my first time doing anything like this so be kind :)

    • Welcome to BitBangers.co.uk!

      Welcome to BitBangers.co.uk!

BitBangers is a forum created by a few friends as a place to come and chat and discuss various topics that are of interest to us.

Previously we were members of a once large forum that dealt with memory modification of PlayStation Portable games. We created “cheat codes” for a vast amount of games, these cheat were anything from a simple infinite health code to a large anti-hack subroutine. For me, and I think many of the other members, this sparked off our path into computing, gaming, programming and technology in general.
Sadly that forum closed at the end of 2013 after a 7 year run; the casual members who still visited the forums had no where to go to keep in touch with each other and this is when BitBangers sprung to life.

We took some time in finding the correct forum software for us, with previous experience with VBulletin and Xenforo we decided to go for something different and open source. After some research and testing we decided to use NodeBB as our main forum software. NodeBB is new, open source and different which filled our requirements perfectly. With NodeBB being open source it is a great way for us to get involved with the development. We have only been up and open a week or so and we have had a few changes added to the main NodeBB repo over at Github. @Schamper has even released a fully working shoutbox plugin which is great!

So, we’ve told you a bit about BitBangers, now it’s time for you to tell us a bit about yourself. Create a topic and introduce yourself!

    • Learning JavaScript?

I have realised that I’m in way over my head with all this node.js, jQuery and JavaScript. With me not programming for a while now I need a refresh and if we are going to keep NodeBB then it might as well be a refresh in JavaScript and Git.

Does anyone know of any decent places to get some practice or of any books I can take a look at?
Most of you know I can code the basics so anything that is a bit more advanced than a basic level would be good. I don’t need to know how to declare variables again :P

So yeah, any websites, books, youtube vids that you know of that would help would be greatly appreciated.
