I know a couple of you guys have dabbled with the PS3. I have no idea what the current state of the scene is like - I don’t know what models can be modified, what software version are required, if other hardware is required to downgrade - so my question is, would somebody that knows these answers please give me a rundown?

I have a 60GB backwards compatible phat PS3 (the one I got from your mate Scuzzy, it still has YLOD and after having it for 3-4 years I’ve finally decided to fix it ). I don’t know what version it is but it’s bound to be low.

I also have a super slim, I believe that’s what it’s called anyway; the version with the sliding disk tray.

I had a quick look around and read that the super slim models cannot be modified, is this correct? Basically, if possible I’d modify the super slim, but if not I’d fix the other one and modify that.

      Cheers.

        Hey @Sly!

I haven’t checked anything in the PS3 scene in a long time. Last time I checked we it was still the same. You need a PS3 on 3.55 or lower to be able to install a custom firmware. If you are on a higher firmware then I think you may need a hardware flasher.

I also think any new PS3 is not hackable unless you install some chip to make it able to run homebrew and play backups.

If you are lucky enough to have one that is hackable then I’m pretty sure its just running the custom firmware install from the XMB via a memory stick. I know it has always used to be this way and I dont really see it changing.

        Hope this helps?

IIRC the super slim is not hackable. I think the CobraODE supported it for a while but I don’t think that product is supported anymore. If your Phat is on <3.55 it’s incredibly easy to hack it, otherwise it’d require a hardware flasher and a tedious procedure of flashing it.

That clears up a lot, cheers guys.

I may try fixing this YLOD but I’m not too confident it can be. In my experience the PS3 has a far lower successful repair rate than the 360. I did actually try to fix it a couple of years ago with a reflow station but to no avail, so I don’t think this will move much further.

Actually Ylod is pretty easy to repair, I fixed my phat ps3 3 times when it has /btw due to heating it ylod,/ but its been awhile since I have fixed it so I don’t remember the steps.

and to clarify super slim really isn’t hackable its just the ODE so no homebrew, but for that phat ya can use the progskeet seems to be only way to hack the phat consoles so gotta buy that to which is 80ish bucks.
