Nest launched in the UK this week.
I seriously considered buying one for my parents house. After reading the latest news article and issues with it I think it was a good idea that I didn’t.

Hi-tech fire alarm in safety halt http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-26879987

The worrying fact for me is that they have remote access to a device in your house that controls your heating. Allowing them to turn off certain options.

I don’t know the specifics of how they do it and I hope it would just be an automatic update. Who knows what someone could do if they managed to get access to this device via some built in remote access protocol.

I don’t think that the realization that a feature that disables your fire alarm by waving your arms could be accidentally triggered discredits the notion of smart appliances.

Also, the only reason sales halted was because they don’t want a 0-day update for people. Disable feature = entire product is fine, the halting issue is because they want to be sure the feature gets disabled.

I’ve known about Nest for a long while now, but never knew they were bought by Google; @almost your reply in the wearable Android thread makes sense now.
